WHAT IS HISTORICAL FENCING?
At Melbourne Historical Fencing we typically fence using Rapier - a dueling sword popular in 17th Century Italy. Fencing games are often catagorised by the weapons they use, such as Foil or Épée. Historical Fencing is an umbrella term to describe fencing games using swords that were popular throughout history, such as the Rapier!
Rapier is returning to popular use in fencing due to the diverse, fun and engaging tactics available to play with. Learning Rapier directly connects you to a rich, fascinating history of fencers spanning back hundreds of years.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT?
Melbourne Historical Fencing hosts a regular space to play fencing and develop your skill. Fencing is suitable for all ages but please note it is a contact sport! Our protective equipment allows for fencing to happen safely but it’s important to always ensure we wear our mask when fencing. No exceptions!
We run weekly sessions that include sparring and group coaching led by our head instructors. We host a regular open league night for fencers wishing to test their skill in friendly competition. Additionally, Melbourne Historical Fencing hosts interstate and international guests and instructors for special workshops and events.
WHAT TO BRING?
We provide the basic equipment required to fence. Fencers usually want their own mask after a few sessions which we offer for purchase in our store along with other fencing gear
We recommend bringing the following for the most comfortable session:
Water bottle
Comfortable, sport shoes (non-marking sole)
Comfortable exercise clothes
Headscarves/bandanas etc. for long hair (not required, but masks can make hair a bit messy!)
Melbourne Historical Fencing will provide the necessary protective fencing mask, jacket, glove and sword so you can jump straight in.
Please note that our loan gear is provisional on availability. We recommend purchasing your own equipment from us or other suppliers to ensure you can fence anytime, and anywhere!
